Purwokerto is a city on the island of Java in Indonesia. It is the capital of Banyumas Regency, Central Java region. The estimated population of the city in 2005 was 249,705.
History of Purwokerto as capital of Banyumas residence cannot be separated from the history of Banyumas itself. Banyumas established in 1582. Its founder is Raden Joko Kahiman which later became the first regent knows as Duke Mrapat. The history starting from the era of the Sultanate Pajang, under King Sultan Hadiwijaya.
Purwokerto is located near the base of Mount Slamet, the highest volcano in Central Java. The city is bisected by the Kali Kranji (Kranji River), and lies near two major east-west roads, Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Gatot Subroto. Its geographic location is 7°26′S 109°14′E.

Mendoan is local food in Purwokerto, from a very slim Tempe (food from a fermented soy bean, very famous food in Java) and covered by dough of wheat flour. Although many places selling Mendoan, the best Mendoan only served in the village. Even though Mendoan sold at city is considerable tasty.
Sate Kambing in Purwokerto Area (Banyumas, Sokaraja, Purbalingga) is also famous for very tender young Goat. One of the best is Sate Tiga Saudara.
Wedang ronde is hot ginger drink with gluten rice balls, peanuts, jelly
Kebon Cafe is located at Jatiwinagun street. Good place to hangin around. lot of local musicians there.
Purwokerto Fly-over, is a well known landmark located in front of train station. The flyover was built in 1967.
Train Station, a Dutch colonial architecture, many Dutch residential building can be located in front of the train station.
Museum Bank, located in Jalan Bank, a museum dedicated for R.A. Wiriatmaja who pioneer the Indonesian banking system.
Purwokerto's central public square (Indonesian: alun-alun) has six banyan trees: a tree at each corner, and two in the center. The Purwokertonians often spend their free time in the square, and it is a common place for children to play. Vendors in the square sell children's toys and local foods. To one side is the regional government building, Kabupaten. Just east of the Alun-alun is the old cemetery on Ragasemangsang Road.
One tourist destination near Purwokerto is Baturaden, located 15 km north of the city. Baturaden is classical highland country at the foot of Gunung Slamet volcano. Baturaden is a popular site for local tourism, with a children's playground, hot springs, trekking and camping. There are two natural hot springs in Baturaden, Pancuran Telu and Pancuran Pitu. The campground is called Wana Wisata and Baturraden Adventure Forest. There are also some hotels, villas and budget hotels available in Baturaden.
Purwokerto is now set as the medical center of southern part of the Central Java Province. Many government and private hospitals are exist serving both general and specific needs. Some of the hospitals are as follows:
The major university in town is Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, located on the northern outskirts of Purwokerto.There are many other private universities and academies that made the city one of the education centre in southern part of central java.

The biggest traditional market is Pasar Wage. There are also several small traditional markets, such as Pasar Manis and Pasar Pon.

Until today airport in Banyumas area is still in planning process. Military airport in Wirasaba Purbalingga is only a half hour from Purwokerto, capital city of Banyumas. Nowadays the airport has been being built for commercial flight. From capital city of Jakarta through Sukarno Hatta Airport, you can pass Adi Sucipto Airport (Yogyakarta), Adi Sumarmo Airport (Solo), Tunggul Wulung Airstrip (Cilacap) and Ahmad Yani International Airport (Semarang) and then go through road way.
The bus station is Terminal Bus Purwokerto on 10 hectares area, clean, safe and comfort located 4 km to the south of the town center. There are regular services throughout the island, including Jakarta (9 hours) with customer recommended Sinar Jaya bus, Yogyakarta (4 to 5.5 hours) with Raharja and Efisiensi bus, Semarang (6 hours) with Nusantara bus and Bandung (6 to 8 hours) with Budiman and goodwill bus. The terminal serve for 24 hours.
Trains to Jakarta take between 4 to 9 hours from the main Purwokerto station depend on train class. The Argo-class trains (Argo Lawu and Argo Dwipangga) are the best of the lot: most comfortable and fastest. Taksaka is almost as good. These train also cater for Yogyakarta destination.
Purwokerto is a relatively small town, travelling around town should not be too expensive. You may jog around town for 30 minutes.
Traditional three-wheeled pedal-powered carts known as becak can be found in most part of Purwokerto. Haggle furiously.
