tr tr tr

Located in the north of Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou County (previously known as Nanping County until being renamed in 1998) is part of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Since the opening of the Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area in 1984, visitors have flocked to the region year by year, and the prosperous tourist industry now accounts for a large proportion of local revenue.

Lying on the highest tableland in the world between the Sichuan Basin and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Jiuzhaigou Valley covers altitudes ranging from 2,000 meters (656,168 feet) to about 4,300 meters (14,107,612 feet). With its large number of lake groups, waterfalls and rich variety of endangered plants and fauna, Jiuzhaigou was awarded the status of UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1997 and was also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The reserve has received a string of other titles including that of a National Geological Park, a AAAA Class Scenic Spot in China and a Green Globe 21.

With some of the most beautiful and inspiring scenery on earth and some of the reserves scenic spots considered holy by the local Tibetan and Qiang people, it is no wonder a number of mysterious legends surround the wonderful landscape of Jiuzhaigou. Many people are drawn to the area for these reasons, and with the park open all year round the authorities have ensured that the fragile environment is sufficiently protected with a range of comprehensive tourist facilities.

In previous years it had been difficult for visitors to get to Jiuzhaigou due to its isolated location, however this is no longer a concern due to the construction of the Jiuzhaigou Ring Way which links the reserve with Chengdu and the Jiuhuang Airport, and has made gaining access to the park a great deal easier. Today most visitors transfer at Chengdu onto long-distance buses or flights going to Jiuzhaigou. The route on the ring way passes through a number of attractions and is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, providing many a distraction for anyone making the journey. The route offers opportunities to enjoy the great Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, the beautiful Mt.Siguniangshan (Four Maiden's Mountain) Scenic Area and another of the world's most naturally stunning locations - the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area.

Historically, Jiuzhaigou has been home to small population of Tibetan and Qing people, and provides a good opportunity to get to know more about the locals' unique life and culture. The highlight of any trip to these areas are special performances laid on by the Tibetan and Qiang people which are also a popular form of nightlife in Jiuzhaigou. Moreover, trying some of the typical local foods and picking up a number of the reasonably-priced, locally-produced goods of the Tibetan and Qiang groups are something of a must on your trip.

Jiuzhaigou has been blessed with some of the most captivating landscapes on earth and words simply do not do it justice, and so you are encouraged to visit at the earliest opportunity.

History
history history history

Jiuzhaigou is a National Park in China. Located in Nanping County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous prefecture in northern Sichuan province, it is about 400 kilometers south of Chengdu City. The name Jiuzhaigou comes from the nine Tibetan villages scattered throughout the valley. The deep valley, stretching 80 kilometers long and covering approximately 620 sq km in area, has a variety of stunning natural scenery — lakes, waterfalls, snowy mountains and lush green forests. It is a treasure house of exotic plants as well as a dwelling for rare animals including the giant panda and the Sichuan takin. Some lumbermen accidentally discovered the area in the 1970’s. Soon after, it became a state natural reserve under special protection. UN added it to the world Natural Heritage List in 1992.

Jiuzhaigou is most famous for its lakes. There are 114 lakes throughout the area. These lakes will bring you into a fairyland of waters. Jiuzhaigou major attractions include: “Nuorilang Waterfall”- the symbol of Jiuzhaigou; “Long Lake”- the largest, deepest, and highest lake of the area; “Mirror Lake”-an amazing tranquil lake reflecting remote snow capped mountains; “Pearl Beach”; “Black Lake”; “Five-Colored Lake”; “Monigou Valley”; “Sword Cliff”; “Shuzhenggou Gully”; and “Zarugou Gully”.

Visitors would normally depart from Chengdu city in the morning, take the bus arranged by the hosting travel agency, travel along some most scenic routes for about 7-10 hours and arrive at Jiuzhaigou in the evening. Most people would spend at least 2 days to tour the area. You should be aware that the tourist area has an elevation of 1980-3100 meters and the temperature could drop to below zero during the night. Normally, the tour package will cover the flights to and from Chengdu, all hotel rooms in Chengdu and Jiuzhaiguo, the tour guide, and all the ground transportation.

Best Time to Visit

Jiuzhaigou has long enjoyed fame as a legendary Fairyland and Earthly Paradise with its wonderful landscape of impressive mountains and lakes. However, in this little bit of paradise, warm clothing is essential throughout the year and temperatures here are extremely variable!

The scenery in Juzhaiguo is impressive all year round but the most popular time to visit is between spring and autumn when the maple leaves are on the trees and the rainfall is minimal. The average temperature in July is 17degree, while the average temperature in January is 3degree although it can drop to as low as minus 4 degrees.

In winter, this place is extremely quiet. Hotels are closed, and lakes, waterfalls and springs are frozen over. Due to the height of the region above sea level, even the summer evenings here can get chilly so make sure you come prepared with warm clothing and a waterproof mac or a brolly never go wasted either!

The price of food in Jiuzhaigou is relatively high due to the fact that materials and goods have to be transported from the larger towns and villages of Songpan and Chengdu. What's more, the choice of dining establishments is very limited! As a general rule, most of the hotels and hostels have decent restaurants attached and the Tibetan style ones such as those in Zehwacha stockade offer good Tibetan style food, just get ready to drink up the gallons of Yak butter tea they will offer!

Local specialties include long noodles, (lamian) which are served up in Zehwacha in a couple of noodle stores and the "Highland Barley Wine". Don't indulge too much in this or you'll be stranded the next day unable to walk!

It is a good idea to stock up on provisions either before you leave one of the bigger cities in Sichuan or at least before you enter the reserve. Water and other drinks are available in most of the villages but at inflated prices.

As Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area is located in the mountainous area of north of Sichuan Province, goods and other life needed products have to be transfered from nearby towns and villages. Thus the price of the food are relatively high.

Except some star rated hotel in the area, there are some samll restaurants around the park gate and along the road. Xiaobu Snack is one of them. Xiaobu Snack is located in the right of the gate of Jiuzhaigou park. In the small restaurants, local tibetan food will be offered, including buttered tea and some highland barley wine and yak meat in different sytles. Not all the visitors like the strong flavor of the Tibetan food.

If you are not customed to the local food, you can also choose to eat in some high rated restaurants affliated with star-rated hotel like Jiu Zhai Paradise, Sheraton Jiuzhaigou Resort. They not only supply the local Tibetan food, but also other good quality Chinese food and Western food.

Visitors can get to most of the restaurants on foot or by taxi while the later saves more time. In order to avoid the crowded in peak tourism season, visitors can take some food with themselves.

Most of the materials in Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong are transported from outside, thus, the food is very expensive. Don’t place high hopes on Jiuzhaigou’s food. In the local restaurants, you can have a taste on the particularly food such as, yam&glutinous-rice cake, dried persimmon, buckwheat cake and sauerkraut noodle etc.

Tibetan handicrafts are favored souvenir items in Jiuzhaigou, especially Tibetan knives, popular for their exquisite craftwork and unique shape (note that knives cannot be brought in your carry-on luggage on the flight home). In addition, Tibetan paper, Tangkas (ritual scroll paintings) and Aroma (similarly portable images perfect for a society of nomads) are also for sale. Also worth purchasing are the embroideries by local women, decorating everything from hats to bags.

shoppingIn Jiuzhaigou, there are a lot of the embroideries of Qiang people, apples of Maowen, some rare Chinese herbal medicines and some Arts and Handicrafts of Zhang people such as Zhangjie Zhangdao and Fozhu. Moreover the sources of fritillary bulbs and cordyceps are abundant in the northwest of Sichuan.

Juzhaiguo National Park

After the long bus journey from Songpan, the entrance to Juzhaiguo National Park is something of a disappointment. This area (including Juzhaiguo town) is basically the starting point for the nature reserve and largely consists of facilities and amenities to prepare travelers before they enter the reserve. It is not worth hanging around here, although you may wish to book your return bus ticket as these can be hard to come by when there are a few travelers around.

The fee to enter the park itself is a whopping RMB220 although this does include one night's accommodation in either Heye Village, Suzheng stockade or Zechachwa stockade. On entering the park, you are faced with a long path stretching some 5km to Heye Village where there are a few basic hotels, 12km to Suzheng stockade and 14km to the point where the road breaks at Nuorilang. From here you can head east to the Primeval Forest and Rize village, or west to Long Lake and Zechawa stockade.

There are basically two options as to how this part of the journey is covered. Walking is a really pleasant way to cover the distance, traffic is limited and the scenery including waterfalls, mountains and lush bamboo forest is spectacular. Alternately, you may wish to save your strength until you get deeper into the reserve. Drivers with cars and jeeps will take you into the reserve for a fee!

Nuorilang

The road from the entrance to the park splits at Nuorilang waterfalls and hotel. Nuorilang consists of a hotel, restaurant, a couple of stores and the spectacular waterfalls which spill down over the cliffs.

From here, you have two options, 17km east to the Primeval Forest or 18km west to Long Lake. Both trips offer impressive scenery, small villages and basic accommodation along the route, although the eastern trip is probably the more interesting of the two with a few gargantuan lakes and waterfalls tumbling down the hillside and the chance to see some rare wildlife along the way.

Suzheng Gully and Stockade

Suzheng Gully and waterfalls are situated along the main path from the entrance to the reserve and just before Nuorilang.

This group of over 40 lakes and spectacular waterfalls are among the most impressive in the park, and with Dege Mountain towering behind, this is a truly beautiful spot. Suzheng Waterfall is close to Suzheng Stockade, a "typical" Tibetan style village, slightly spoiled by the fact that so many travelers have passed through and the villagers now pose for photo sessions.

Shuzheng Valley

Shuzheng valley is the major tour route to Jiuzhaigou. More than 40% of the lakes and ponds are situated in the valley. They are Double-Dragon Lake, Bonsai Beach, Reed Lake, Sparking Lake, Tiger Lake, Shuzheng Waterfall, Rhinoceros Lake, and Nuorilang Waterfall, etc.

Double-Dragon Lake
Double-Dragon Lake is located in the bushes below the waterfall of Huohua Hai . It got its name from the two biological calcium dykes, which lurk under the water. Possibly due to the peaceful environment and the blessing of the two huge "dragons", there are many beautiful swans and mandarin ducks full of affection. Lucky visitors may catch the view of ducks swimming in groups and swans dancing in the air.

Nuorilang Lake

The Nuorilang Lake is the starting spot of Rize Valley , famous for its blue water and overlapped, multi-colored waterfalls. In spring and summer, lake dikes arc half- submerged in water that seem to have energized everything. Autumn reddens the tree leaves, against the effulgent lake water. Winter sees water turn into ice that wraps and encloses the whole world.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake is a semi-marsh lake with an altitude of 2905 meters. In the broad lake, there grow kinds of plants: green grasses, wild flowers etc. A flow of clear water winds through the swamp. Swans and wild ducks pay their frequent calls here.

Transportation

transportBy Air:

Formerly it was impossible to reach Jiuzhaigou directly by air by train or by bus. Now because the new airlines between Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou has been opened we have the most convenient way to Jiuzhaigou. Take a plane to Chengdu Shuanglong international airport first and stay overnight in Chengdu, then leave Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou Jiuzhai-Huanglong airport by air again next day.

Notice:

It is 15km away from the Shuangliu international airport to Chengdu city center, RMB5 is the starting price of taxi and 1.7yuan/km

Jiuzhai-Huanglong Airport is located at the Chuanzhu Temple town Songpan county and starts using at 28th Sep 2003. It is an 83km long way between the airport and the entrance of Jiuzhaigou. The southwest suboffice of Air China Company has the first airlines to Chengdu and Chongqing. It is only a 45 minutes journey from Chengdu to Jiuzhai--Huanglong airport.

By Train:

There are direct trains to Chengdu from more than 10 main Chinese cities including Beijing Shanghai Guangzhou Chongqing Xi'an Kunming Wulumuqi Lanzhou and so on. We can take a train (Baocheng line) to Chengdu, Guangyuan or Jiangyou and then hop on a bus to Jiuzhaigou. But actually this journey will make you feel very tired and usually the train is not on time.

By Bus:

There is a ring road between Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. When you arrive at Chengdu you can take a bus to Jiuzhaigou directly.

The ring road of Jiuzhaigou is an important tour route of Sichuan 913km long and with two directions(east and west). So there are two routes constituted the round- trip between Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou.

West route: approximately 430 km
Chengdu--Dujiangyan--Wenchuan--Maoxian--Songpan--Chuanzhu temple--Jiuzhaigou
East route: about 520 km
Chengdu--Guanghan--Deyang--Mianyang--Jiangyou--Pingwu--Jiuzhaigou county--Jiuzhaigou

Both of the two routes take 9-10 hours. The highway from Chendu to Mianyang Dujiangyan and Jiangyou is smooth and wide, which makes the winter tour to be possible. In summer raining season, landslide happens sometimes here, however, the local government does a good protection for the road. Generally several hours later the problems will be solved.

The east route highway is longer than that of the west one. The total length is approximately 170km. Now there are direct buses from Mianyang to Jiuzhaigou in the east route. And the west route goes along Ming river passing 5 towns where you will see the traditional culture of Zhang people and Qiang people, the destroyed vegetation and the well preserved nature resources.

The highway from Chuanzhu temple to Jiuzhaigou was opened in September 2003 which is the most important route to Jiuzhaigou.
