Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province and its political, economic and cultural center. With its famous natural beauty and cultural heritages, Hangzhou is one of China's most important tourist venues.

The City, the southern terminus of the Grand Canal, is located on the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in southeast China, a superior position in the Yangtze Delta and only 180 kilometers from Shanghai. Hangzhou has a subtropical monsoon type climate with four quite distinct seasons. However, it is neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter making it a year round destination.

Hangzhou has long been a famous tourist attraction. The widely expressed Chinese proverb, "in heaven there is paradise and on earth there are Hangzhou and Suzhou" combined with the words of Marco Polo who described this place as, "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world" have helped to make Hangzhou one of the biggest tourist attractions in the entire country.

Fortunately, while any city would struggle to live up to a reputation as "paradise", Hangzhou makes a good stab at it. Despite the crowds, hoards of tour groups and the idyllic preconceptions one might have before arrival, it is hard not to like this city. Even the most cynical traveler will appreciate the West Lake for its space and beauty, if nothing else.

Hangzhou is a city with a rich history and culture, spanning back over 2000 years. The city first made a name for itself in the sixth century, when the Grand Canal opened up and linked the area to other centers of trade such as Suzhou. The Song dynasty helped to make Hangzhou famous when they moved the imperial family here in the 12th Century. With its inviting views and outstanding scenery, the West Lake soon became popular with numerous artists, poets and painters seeking inspiration in this little bit of "paradise".

Today, Hangzhou (the capital of Zhejiang province) has a population of 6.11 million. The "West Lake" provides the idyllic image of Hangzhou that most people leave with. This huge circular fresh water lake, covering 3km from north to south and 3kms from east to west, is surrounded by hills on three sides and the city on the fourth. Two picture- postcard causeways cross the lake and three islands float in the middle. There are numerous historical relics and sights scattered about the Lake, including the famous Buddhist temple, Lingyin Si. You can see many of Hangzhou's sights in a couple of days. However, this is a nice place to relax and do some good walking and eating so if possible, plan to spend at least a few days here.

Most visitors to Hangzhou come from Shanghai, and the stark contrast between the two cities is incredible. Hangzhou can get very busy but the sheer size of the area around the West Lake, means that it is always possible to find a bit of peace and quiet. The air and the water feel refreshingly clean here too, and a day or two spent walking around the lake, the tea plantations and the surrounding hills should blow away any cobwebs, leaving you feeling refreshed and recharged.

Settlers from the Hemdu tribes are known to have settled 60 miles (100kms) east of what is now known as Hangzhou during the Neolithic period. Historians believe that these were the first tribes to establish permanent settlements anywhere close to Hangzhou. It wasn’t until the Qin dynasty (221 to 206 BC) however that more permanent settlements emerged, with Emperor Qin Shi Huang claiming the Hangzhou area as part of his empire following his first visit.City walls were erected during the Sui dynasty (581 to 618 AD) and the Grand Canal, which began at Beijing, was extended to Hangzhou. By connecting the city with Beijing, Hangzhou rapidly benefited from increased trading opportunities and consequently saw significant progression in both its financial and political status. Later, in the Tang dynasty (618 to 907 AD), the population of the city swelled and its status was further elevated with it becoming the capital of the Wuyue kingdom in the latter part of the 10th century.

Hangzhou's golden years were during the Southern Song dynasty (1127 to 1279), during which it experienced great prosperity and enjoyed status as the capital of the Southern Song Empire. Industry flourished in the city and religion was introduced, with Taoism and Buddhism being the favoured philosophies. Some temples still present in the city today have survived from the Southern Song dynasty.

During the Yuan dynasty (1206 to 1368), Hangzhou was under the control of the Mongols, along with the rest of China, with its capture taking place in 1276 at the hands of the armies of Kublai Khan. Towards the end of the 13th century, the intrepid Marco Polo arrived in Hangzhou and was inspired by what he saw, describing it as: “beyond dispute the finest and the noblest (city) in the world”. Polo wrote of the enormity of Hangzhou, and while his writings were subject to some exaggerations, historians believe that the city was in fact the largest in the world in the periods from 1180 to 1315 and 1348 to 1358

During the early part of the Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644), the city’s trend towards growth continued, bolstered by the trading opportunities of its successful port. When the harbour silted up, however, progress naturally took a turn for the worst. Hangzhou remained buoyant despite a decline in trade, benefiting from its silk industry which was the most significant in all of the country. The success of this industry continued well into the Qing dynasty (1616 to 1911) and beyond into modern times.

In the early part of the 20th century, Hangzhou was overtaken by Shanghai in terms of trading and commerce. The Kuomintang ruled the city from 1928 to 1949 until the status quo was shaken up by the People's Liberation Army on 3rd May 1949. In the 20th century Hangzhou once again began to see prosperity, this time by the injection of foreign capital and by many of the country’s most successful big business choosing the city as their base of operations.

Hangzhou may be overshadowed by some of the better known tourist destinations which boast spectacular mountains, architectural masterpieces, golden beaches or exotic ethnic cultures. However, the city has an elegant air and a distinguished thousand year history. Hangzhou is a noted ancient capital of China and is famed for Xi Hu (West Lake)and Grand Canal.

Liangzhu Culture, which dates from about 4,700 years ago, was part of the vital cultural life existing in the Tiahu Lake drainage area, in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The archeological site found here, named for its discovery in Liangzhu Town, is estimated to be 5,000 years old. At that time both bronze and stone wares were used, black pottery was manufactured and the tripod vessel was used for cooking. Jade ritual articles, silk pieces and thread are also typical excavation finds, indicating the area's prosperity in the prehistoric age.

Hangzhou city was established 2,000 years ago during the Spring and Autumn Periods (770BC-476BC) on a site bordering Wu and Yue States. Before the Sui Court (581-618) changed its name to Hangzhou, this area was successively called Yuhang and Qiantang. A major event that took place during the dynasty was the completion of the Grand Canal, finally linking together the various sections constructed over a thousand years.

The second wave of prosperity in Hangzhou's history occurred after it became the capital of Wuyue State during the Five Dynasties and Ten States (907-960) periods. A new city was built based on the site of the prefecture government of Hangzhou during the Sui and Tang (618-907) dynasties. Buddhism was becoming increasingly popular during this period and this Buddhist state in Southeast China was the only area to remain peaceful and unspoiled during the warring years thanks to wise political decision making by the king. Since then, Hangzhou has made the most of its fertile land, developing advanced silk, tea and paper making techniques and enjoying a commercial boom.

Moving forward to the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), Hangzhou became a renowned economic and cultural center for the entire country. Later when the Southern Song Dynasty (1279-1368) moved its regime southward, Hangzhou was nominated as its capital and lasted as such for 152 years. The city reached its zenith at this time as the biggest international trade center and the nation's political and cultural center. It was also among the most populous cities in the world.

Advanced silk, printing, paper and porcelain production, together with an elegant society and culture made it the most beautiful and luxurious city in the world, as praised by Italian traveler Marco Polo. Although no longer the center of a dynasty, Hangzhou remains a shining pearl in the southeast.

In classical poems, the Western Lake was alluded to as a great beauty. The scene of many romantic and sad stories, the lake holds many secrets. As well as the lake, the tea and silk industries, Liangzhu Culture, the official kiln and Grand Canal museums are also important attractions. There is much for the tourist to discover in Hangzhou.

But this particular tale does not end here. It goes on to say that the emperor gave the farmer some cash and said he could set up a restaurant with it. Five years later the emperor came to Hangzhou again and patronized the farmer’s restaurant. The emperor liked what he enjoyed there and reminisced about their first encounter. This time, the emperor did not give the farmer-turned restaurateur money. The scholarly emperor gave the restaurant a title: Emperor’s Meal.

Public Bus

Public BusAs an important tourism city, Hangzhou has good public transportation. Public buses go virtually everywhere in the city proper. The bus number is important. Bus numbers prefixed by "K" are air-conditioned. Bus numbers prefixed by "3" and "5" run to the neighboring rural areas and special lines, respectively. Tourism buses are indicated by a Chinese"游" (pinyin: you, pronounced: yo).

Bus fares are very cheap. It is 1 yuan for all bus numbers with one or two digits (e.g. Bus No. 8 or No. 13) and three-digit bus numbers preceded by "1"( e.g. No.132). It is 2 yuan for all air-conditioned buses. Prices for special bus lines and buses running to the neighboring rural areas vary according to the bus condition and distance (the starting price for a general bus is 1 yuan and 2 yuan for a air-conditioned one). All tourism buses are air-conditioned and cost 2 yuan.

Hangzhou has a well developed city-bus network. As well as normal routes around the city, various Tourism Lines, Sightseeing Lines and Holiday Lines are also available. Most of the city-buses in Hangzhou charge CNY 1~3 per person.

TaxiLike most major world cities, Hangzhou has a large number of taxis which allow for quick and convenient travel within the city proper. Most of the city 's taxis are turquoise-green in color and easily identifiable by the word "Taxi" printed in both English and Chinese on the vehicles. Taxis for hire are marked by the green (or sometimes yellow-orange) light-up signs above the dashboard on each car.

Hangzhou taxi drivers always use the meter as required by law. All routes under three kilometers are charged a flat rate of 10 RMB (the temporary addition of a 1 RMB "fuel tax" increase mandated by the government as of August 1, 2006, is now not charged). There is a low "slow-speed" charge for when the taxi is waiting at lights, stopped in traffic. It is advisable to take a receipt each time use you a taxi, should you wish to contact the taxi company or driver at later time to dispute a fare, recover a lost article, etc.

Few, if any, of they city 's taxi drivers speak English or other foreign languages. It is therefore important that you be able to point out your destination on map, present the driver with the name of the destination (in written Chinese), or properly pronounce the name of the destination in spoken Mandarin Chinese. If you have a Chinese acquaintance whom you can reach by cell phone, you can allow him or her to speak to your driver through the phone to convey the desired information.

Hangzhou taxis are not allowed to carry more than four passengers, although you may be able to convince or bribe a driver to allow you to "hide" an extra passenger in the backseat. This can be worth if the trouble or expense if it saves your group from needing to take two taxis.

Taxis, like all public transportation, are difficult to come by during the tourist weeks (Chinese New Year, May Golden Week, and October National Week); also, taxis between 7:30 and 8:45am and 5:30-7:00pm are difficult to flag, as they are always full or in the middle of a shift change. A taxi with an imminent shift change (around 4.30-5pm) will be showing a plate in the windscreen (Chinese characters of course) and will only take you if your route coincides with his (or hers, a good number of taxi drivers in Hangzhou are women). A good rule of thumb is that if you need a taxi, there won 't be any, but if you don 't need one, they will be driving extremely slowly in the right lane disrupting traffic and honking and flashing their brights at you. Being familiar with areas that taxis frequent or places where taxi passengers are likely to be dropped off at will aid you in finding a ride.

Taxi drivers will also negotiate for long distance trips, or full-day / half-day hiring. A trip to Pudong airport in Shanghai will be RMB600-1000 depending on time of day or night.
