Transportation
Becaks
A becak is a tricycle, which is pedalled by a man where one or two passengers sit in front. This transport has been around for 40 years, but is slowly disappearing. Agree on the fare with the driver before he begins the journey.
Buses
There are three main terminals in Jakarta servicing inter-cities. Some buses are air-conditioned; choose only Patas (express) buses, if possible. Damri buses run every 30 – 60 minutes to five city terminals. Fare is around 4,000 rupiahs and the journey takes around 45 – 60 minutes.
Cars & Motorcycles
There are several car rental companies around and motorbikes for rent also. A license is needed to rent and driving is on the left. Chauffeur is optional.
Flights
There are several domestic airlines (Merpati, Mandala & Lion Air) and national carrier, Garuda operating on domestic routes that has several flights daily to destinations such as Bali, Medan and Manado. Shuttle flights to Surabaya and Semarang are also available.
Taxis
All licensed taxis run by meters. For safety concerns, it is advisable to only take Silver Bird or Blue Bird taxis. If travelling from the airport, an airport surcharge and toll road will be added to the fare.

Buses
The Damri shuttle bus is available to transport passengers hourly to specific areas of Jakarta.
Inter-Terminal
A shuttle bus operates between both terminals.
Soekarno-Hatta Airport
There are two terminals at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Terminal I serves domestic flights while Terminal II serves international and domestic flights.
Taxis
Taxis are available at the counters of the Public Hall of the Arrival Area. Taxis are metered and a surcharge will be added to the fare.
Attractions
Glodok & Jalan Surabaya
This is the famous shopping area in Jakarta. It is well-known for its many antique shops and street stalls specialising in porcelains, antique furniture and old Dutch lamps. Prices are normally cheap and bargains can be found. The most comprehensive shopping centre is the government-operated Sarinah Department Store at Jalan M.H. Thamrin.
Istana Merdeka (Merdeka Palace)
Istana Merdeka is the official residence of the President and ceremonies will be held at the Istana for national celebrations. Situated at JI. Merdeka Utara, it was first built by Peter Tency in 1874 and passed through several hands before it became the President's home today.
Museum Nasional (National Museum)
Museum Nasional is also called the Museum Gajah (Elephant Musuem) as a bronze elephant stands right at front of the building since 1871. The elephant was a gift from King Chulalongkorn of Thailand in 1871 when he visited Batavia. The museum houses a unique collection of Indonesia culture relics of special interest as well as Chinese and Southeast Asia ceramic. The Treasure Room, with its priceless exhibits, is only open Sunday mornings or on special requests.
Museum Wayang (Puppet Museum)
Situated to the west of the Jakarta History Museum, Museum Wayang was built in 1640 and was originally a church. It continued as a church until it was taken over and became a warehouse. Now, the building stands as a museum and contains a rich collection of puppets from Sumatra, Java, Bali, Malaysia, China and Thailand, etc. It possesses the musical instruments as well as the apparatus for staging a puppet show.
Taman Ismail Marzuki (Jakarta Art Centre)
The focal point of cultural activities, the Jakarta Art Centre stages performances by the Jakarta Symphony Orchestra and drama groups as well as regional art shows, folk dances, song recitals and concerts. There will be events staged monthly and tickets can be bought at the Centre.
