Exploring Jakarta

As Indonesia’s largest city, Jakarta offers an enormous supply of things to see and do. Central Jakarta offers a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shopping malls, along with museums monuments and other attractions.

Shopping

Central Jakarta, the main tourist hub, offers excellent shopping. Plaza Senayan, Plaza Semanggi, Mall Artha Gading are the country’s largest malls, offers a vast selection of clothing, cosmetics, jewelry and souvenirs as well as entertainment venue. Plaza Indonesia-EX has 250 stores, including Versace and Hard Rock Café. For bargain hunters, try Mangga Dua and Pasar Baru, which specializes in fabrics and clothing.

Traditional Indonesian arts and crafts are popular as souvenirs are available at Sarinah and Pasar Raya Grande in Blok M area. Batik hand-woven fabrics, woodcarvings and paintings are easily available. In the smaller shops, bargaining is accepted; however, in larger shops, prices are fixed. Electronics goods are both high quality and inexpensive with all major brands available.

National Museum

Constructed in 1862, the National Museum features archeological collections, gold jewelry and artifacts, stone carvings and ceramics. The bronze elephant in front of the museum was a gift from Siam's (Thailand's) famous King Chulalongkorn, who visited Batavia in 1871.

Monas

Monas may well be Jakarta’s most visited attraction. This national monument was built in the 1960s and 1970s to honor the Indonesian people’s fierce patriotism and strong commitment to freedom. The tower is 450ft (137m) tall and topped with a large bronze plate coated in 35 kilgrams of gold. The bottom of the monument is a museum, while the top has an observatory that offers excellent views of the city.

Taman Mini Indonesia

The Taman Mini Indonesian Indah, or miniature park, which has cultural exhibits from each of Indonesia’s provinces. Don’t be fooled by the name—the park spans several hundred acres. Each of Indonesia’s provinces is represented by its own pavilion and area. You'll also find botanical gardens, a bird's park, an Aquarium, and a Komodo Dragon exhibit. An aerial tramway and a giant-screen IMAX movie theatre, are some of the park’s most recent attractions, with new attractions and rides being added all the time.

Ancol

Ancol is one of the capital's true oceanfront delights. Here you will find a marina, an eighteen-hole public golf course, Pasar Seni and three parks with different themes: Dunia Fantasi, Atlantis Water Adventure and Gelanggang Samudra that will take the visitors to an exciting expedition to trace the lost kingdoms. Pasar Seni is an excellent place to watch painters, woodcarvers, leather crafters and other artisans at work. It's also a great spot to enjoy local dishes in one of the many shaded outdoor restaurants and take in the free performances of music, dance or puppetry taking place on the central outdoor stage. Another addition to Ancol is the Wahana 4-Dimensions. This special facility is built inside another area called Aztec Land, in a form of an Aztec pyramid.

Kebun Binatang Ragunan

This wonderful zoo is located in South Jakarta, about a half-hour taxi ride from the city centre. The atmosphere is extremely pleasant, with long shaded walkways winding among the impressive exhibits. On display are many of Indonesia's rare and endangered wildlife species, including the komodo dragon, the sumateran tiger, the orangutan and the cendrawasih bird.

Visas

Currency

The rupiah (Rp) is the unit of currency. Exchange facilities are rare in remote places. Cash is the preferred form of transaction, though credit cards are accepted at large hotels and restaurants. Money and travellers cheques can be exchanged at banks or at licensed exchange counters. 24-hour automated teller machines (ATMs) are widely available throughout the city, although they may be difficult to find once beyond the city limits.

Public Health

A visit to a doctor and a current set of vaccinations is advisable before visiting Indonesia. Medical facilities are available and adequate in major cities and resorts, but can be inadequate elsewhere.

All food must be well cooked. Drink only water that has been boiled or bottled mineral water. Tap water in the hotel is potable and if desired, may be boiled prior to consumption using the facilities provided in-room. Bottled drinking water is also available in every hotel room.

The city air in Jakarta can become quite smoggy. Asthmatic travelers should carry their medication at all times

Dress

Light fabrics are recommended due to the warm, humid climate. For men, a jacket and tie is considered appropriate when making business calls or by wearing a traditional long-sleeve batik shirt. Shorts and beachwear are not considered appropriate for visits to temples, mosques and other places of worship.

Weather

Jakarta is almost always hot and humid. Average maximum temperatures stay above 30°C (86°F) throughout the year. October to February is the official wet season. July through to September has the least amount of rain, and it is then when the temperature remains consistently high.

Via Taxi

We recommend using only the BlueBird or the more upscale SilverBird taxi services. To access the SilverBird from the airport Transportation Service booth which is situated in front of the departures area. Fare for a SilverBird Taxi to the hotel is approximately Rp. 170,000 net (USD 19).

A surcharge of Rp. 8,000 (USD 1) is required for every taxi leaving the airport.

Taxis

One of the easiest and most convenient ways of getting around Jakarta is to take taxis. Do not allow informal agents on the street to arrange or find transportation for you, as they expect to get paid by both you and the driver. When possible, call for the cabs beforehand, or check with our hotel staff who will be happy to help you hire a driver.

Trains

Train service is available throughout Java and parts of Sumatra around Padang, West Sumatra, Medan, and Lampung. The Parahyangan offers four services a day between Jakarta and Bandung, taking about three hours. The Argo Bromo and Argo Anggrek offers a service of eight hours trip from Jakarta to Surabaya, the second biggest city in Indonesia after Jakarta.

Buses

Many Jakarta buses are air-conditioned and have reclining seats as well as TV with video programs. There are numerous bus services between major cities in Java. Enquire with the hotel staff regarding the best place to catch a bus in order to reach your destination.

Private Car

Mikrolet, Kopaja and Trans Jakarta

These services are employed on trips between city and suburbs and can seat from 10 to 40 passengers per vehicle. Fares are metered based on distance travelled. To arrange a trip for your family or group, please speak with our hotel staff.

Becak

The becak is a tricycle pedalled by a driver who sits behind the passenger. It could seat two persons, though rather tightly. Becaks are mostly found in cities and towns on Java and have been here for over four decades. They can still be found in the faraway suburbs where streets are narrow and other public transportation is rare. In other cities like Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang and Denpasar they can still be used for short distances.

Ojek

An Ojek is a motorbike hired with its rider. You may pay for a single trip or hire it by the hour or day. The agreed upon fare depends on distance covered. Ojeks usually come in handy to go to places where roads are either too narrow or bumpy for four-wheel vehicles.
